West Mercia Women's Aid
West Mercia Women's Aid is the lead charity working with victims and survivors of domestic violence and abuse across Herefordshire. The charity provides a 24 hour Specialist Support Helpline; Refuge accommodation; support services and group recovery programmes, all aimed to promote sustainable recovery over the long term and break patterns of domestic abuse.
Children who live, or have lived, in an environment of domestic violence or abuse can also be supported and helped to learn about what are healthy or unhealthy relationships, and how to safely exit the latter.
As a specialist Domestic Abuse service West Mercia Women's Aid also welcomes calls from professionals, statutory services and safeguarding agencies working with, or looking to refer, victims of domestic abuse.
The Women's Aid definition of domestic violence and abuse is physical, sexual, psychological or financial violence that takes place within an intimate or family-type relationship and that forms a pattern of coercive and controlling behaviour. This can include forced marriage and so-called 'honour crimes'. Domestic violence may include a range of abusive behaviours, not all of which are in themselves inherently 'violent'.
West Mercia Women's Aid is committed to equality and diversity and aims to provide services regardless of ethnicity, sexuality, disability, religion or class. This local charity works with women with complex issues including drug or alcohol use, mental health problems and learning difficulties.
