Earwax removal

GP surgeries across Herefordshire and other counties are no longer completing earwax removal. This is causing increased wait times and patient frustrations for what was once a “no wait” service completed by nursing and Health Care Assistant staff. We aim to complete all appointments within 48hrs of you contacting us!

Earwax Removal by Microsuction

Earwax is produced inside your ears to keep them clean and free of germs. It usually passes out of the ears harmlessly, but sometimes too much can build up and block the ears.

What is Microsuction?

Microsuction, compared to other traditional forms of wax removal, is the safest and most effective form of ear wax removal and sometimes doesn’t require any pre-treatment of ear drops.

What is Earwax irrigation? (commonly known as syringing)

Removal of earwax using irrigation techniques is the use of warm water used to gently wash out the earwax. It is common that pre treatment the use of olive oil is used at least up to two weeks prior to an appointment. Before using any form of fluid you should seek medical advice from your GP or other suitably qualified healthcare advisor.
