Herefordshire Riding for the Disabled

Herefordshire Riding for the Disabled is a charity which was set up in 1991. We provide horse care and riding sessions for those who suffer from mental health issues or have physical or intellectual disabilities.
We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for disabled people, from the very young to retired adults, all through the magic of horses.
Our horse care and riding sessions aim to improve mobility while providing mental and physical stimulation. After several sessions, we notice a marked improvement in many of our participants. Riding a horse moves the body in a similar way to natural human walking; working muscles around the spine, encouraging gentle movement of the arms, shoulders, head and torso, as well as the rest of the body. Riders often enjoy improved balance, coordination and muscle tone.
The emotional and psychological benefits help develop self-esteem and confidence as our riders steadily improve. They are thrilled as they realise they can steer a horse, especially through obstacles. As they progress, if they wish, they can learn to compete in games, dressage and show jumping. As a result, riders experience independence, mobility, success and self-belief.
We offer group and private riding, as well as horse care sessions. We have a mechanical horse, an indoor school arena and beautiful countryside around the centre to ride in. In the summer, we set up obstacles in our fields to further improve riding skills and knowledge. Inside the centre, we use hoists and raised platforms to enable riders of all abilities to enjoy the facilities at Holme Lacy Therapeutic Centre.
Our enthusiastic, fully qualified, experienced staff are all here to help our riders. We are supported by a wonderful team of volunteers, trained to assist our instructors as they help each rider achieve their personal goals. And of course, our horses are well trained, gentle, good natured and enrich all of our lives.
At Herefordshire RDA we believe it is what you can do that counts.
