Tuesday Morning Kitchen

Tuesday Morning Kitchen?
Cooking, a cuppa, and a little bit more!
Come and join us in the community garden kitchen, Old Gloucester Road, on Tuesdays at 10.45, after you have shopped the zero-waste stall. We don’t want your shopping, that is for you to take home, we collect items that are left over on Monday’s stall, adding a few basic ingredients to make something warming and tasty.
There are generally vegetables left over, just a few carrots, maybe some parsnips, a bag of tomatoes, an onion, the odd spring onion. You might say, nothing worth having, but soften then in some oil, add stock, simmer and there is enough to make a small pan of warming soup to be enjoyed before going home. We have made tomato and basil and carrot and cumin soup to date…parsnip and apple coming up!
Amazingly, baguettes are frequently thrown away from the stall and because of this we have tried to include as many recipes as possible using those un-loved loaves. Forget apple crumble, try making apple brown betty, layering apples, coarse breadcrumbs, sugar and slivers of butter and bake until golden brown. It is delicious! I can hear you say what about bread-and-butter pudding. Yes, what about bread-and-butter pudding, but have you tried savoury bread and butter pudding? Layer slices of French bread with fried onions and grated cheese. Yet another golden delicious oldie, beloved by our great grandmothers! Each person makes their own in a foil dish to take home. We have made mushroom crostini, French bread pizza and eggy bread. What will you make?
You may want to cook but you don’t know how or where to start? You may have run out of fresh ideas for what to cook for tea? Do you avoid certain ingredients on the stall because you don’t know what to do with them? Perhaps you would just like some company and only want to help with basic tasks. You are welcome!
This is not Master Chef nor Bake-Off nor Ready Steady Cook (close though) It is Tuesday Morning Kitchen! We are simply planning to cook together using what is available. If you fancy the idea, come along and see what you think. You can be involved, as little or as much as you like. It is warm in the kitchen!
Come into the kitchen and give it a try, come for a cuppa, cook if you like, keep warm and even take something small, but tasty, home.
