Protect Your Birds: Avian Influenza Prevention Measures in Place

10 March 2025

Bird flu has been confirmed at two locations in Herefordshire, near Fownhope and Kington, leading to strict control measures to prevent further spread. If you keep birds—whether as pets, in a backyard flock, or commercially—it is now mandatory to keep them housed under the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ).

Current restrictions include:

  • Near Fownhope – A 3km Captive Bird Monitoring Zone is in place.
  • Near Kington – A 3km Protection Zone and 10km Surveillance Zone have been declared.

Affected poultry at the 2 locations will be humanely culled.

📢 Take Action: Register Your Birds
All poultry and captive bird keepers must register their flocks, even if you only have a few birds. Registration helps track and prevent the spread of avian flu. It’s also a legal requirement:

🔗 Register fewer than 50 birds
🔗 Register 50 or more birds
