The Invisible Danger of Carbon Monoxide
28 November 2025
As the weather turns colder, many of us close our windows and switch on the heating to stay warm. But there’s an invisible danger that could be lurking in our homes: carbon monoxide (CO).
Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas – you can’t see it, smell it, or taste it – yet it can be deadly. Every year in England and Wales, around 20 people die from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, and many more are hospitalised.
This gas can leak from faulty or poorly maintained appliances such as boilers, fires, or cookers. Because it’s undetectable without a proper alarm, it’s vital to take steps to protect yourself and your family.
How to stay safe:
- Install a carbon monoxide alarm in every room with a fuel-burning appliance.
- Have your appliances serviced regularly by a qualified engineer.
- Ensure chimneys and flues are clear and in good condition.
- Never block ventilation points.
